If you want to embrace the Caribbean way of life and ‘go-slow’, visit Caye Caulker, Belize. You won’t find resorts, nightlife, and a party town, but you will find sunshine, great seafood, and a unique chilled out atmosphere.
Take the fast ferry from Belize City or Chetumal, Mexico. Connections are frequent and the friendly crew will change your Mexican pesos or US dollars to Belizean dollars.
Where to stay
The Tropical Paradise Hotel is right on the beach and within walking distance of great restaurants, the beach and everything you could possibly need. Chill out by the pool, enjoy a cocktail and get into the habit of going slow.
Where to eat
You must try the fresh seafood and if you’re a lobster fan you are definitely in the right place. Happy Lobster and Wet Willies do fantastic fresh fish and barbequed lobster covered in garlic butter. Wash it all down at The Lazy Lizard with a Rum Punch or Belikin Beer as the sun goes down. In the morning try a Fry Jack from Errolyn’s House. Fry Jacks are fried tortillas filled with oozy cheeses and cost less than $3USD. A great way to start the day.
The small island is easy enough to get around by foot but if you want to do some sightseeing on two wheels rent a bike. There are shops along the waterfront that will rent you a bike for as little as $7.50USD / $15BZD for a day.
What to do
Caye Caulker is home to the second largest Barrier Reef. Ragamuffin tours offer great value day trips to see all the beautiful coral and sea life. Spend the day with the crew snorkeling Shark Alley, the Coral Gardens, and Hol Chan. Then on the way back enjoy rum punch as the sun sets.
